» Smith confirmed as head coach

After a solid debut ASB Premiership season WaiBOP United is already making plans for the 2014/15 campaign.

One of the franchise’s key figures from the recently completed campaign was head coach Peter Smith and the franchise is pleased to confirm he will continue in this role.

Peter Arndell, the CEO of WaiBOP Football Federation, the organisation that holds WaiBOP United’s franchise license, is delighted to maintain continuity with one of the franchise’s key positions. “We had a solid first season in the ASB Premiership and a lot of what we achieved was down to Pete,” said Arndell.

“He was able to build a competitive side that represented our region well. It’s important that our key individuals stay involved if we’re to run a successful and sustainable organisation so I’m pleased Pete will continue as our head coach.”

For his part Smith is happy to begin his preparations for next season. “We did some good things during the 2013/14 ASB Premiership, but it was just the start,” he explained. “We’re a new organisation, with a lot of new players and staff, so we’ll be all the better for having a full season under our belts.”

Player analysis and preparation begins right away for Smith. “As a coach I can see lots of areas we need to improve if we’re to become a more consistent team. That’s what I’ll be looking to get stuck into, starting now,” he said. “The NRFL starts this weekend and our scouting begins with that. It’s important we build a strong working relationship with the local NRFL clubs so that both the clubs and WaiBOP United benefit. That will be a focus moving forward.”

The franchise is currently reviewing its performance during the 2013/14 ASB Premiership. “We’ve got some experienced football people involved with WaiBOP United, both staff and volunteers, so it’s important we listen to what they have to say,” said Arndell. “We’ll review all our operations, both on and off the field, and then start preparing for the new season. While the 2014/15 ASB Premiership may seem a long way off there’s no doubting it will be here before we know it.”
