» Trio return for 2014/15 campaign

WaiBOP United is pleased to announce the re-signing of Liam Higgins, Shaydon Young and Danyon Drake, ahead of the 2014/15 ASB Premiership season.

All three players featured during WaiBOP United’s inaugural ASB Premiership campaign.

Higgins (pictured left) was a regular at left-back, playing eleven games and scoring once. He is a strong and athletic presence and was an important part of last season’s first choice back four. For a young player, Higgins is already loaded with experience, having played several seasons in the ASB Premiership as well as representing New Zealand at the 2011 and 2013 FIFA U-20 World Cups.

Young (pictured centre), who featured in front of Higgins on the left hand side of midfield, played twelve games, also scoring once, during the 2013/14 ASB Premiership. A quick and incisive attacking midfielder, Young was one of the big improvers during last season’s campaign and will be an important part of the team jigsaw in the season ahead.

Drake (picture right) was last season’s back-up keeper to established number 1, Andy McNeil. He came on during the final match of the 2013/14 campaign, against Wellington, for an injured McNeil, only to then dislocate his shoulder.

Peter Smith, WaiBOP United Head Coach, is pleased to have these three young players back with his squad this season. “I enjoyed working with Liam, Shaydon and Danyon last season. They are excellent young players who are maturing into quality ASB Premiership performers,” explains Smith. “It’s also important that we have a core of players who already know what we’re about, who understand what we’re trying to achieve and who have a certain level of hunger from having experienced the tougher times last season. Hopefully all three can bring what they learnt last season to the squad environment and match day and help drive this team forward.”

Announcements on further player signings will follow soon.
